Magical Books

I LOVE reading books to my kids. I really get into them and do the voices and the motions.  Here are some of my favorites.  Enjoy!

Walter the Baker by Eric Carle- This books tells a story of how pretzels were invented.

Dragon Dancing by Carole Lexa Schaefer – This book has fantastic illustrations and is about a little girl’s  birthday.

Zen Shorts by Jon Muth- Beautiful watercolor illustrations and a great story for young and old. The main character Stillwater, a panda, is based on the Zen artist/teacher Sengai Gibbob (1750-1838). Sengai Gibbob’s drawings were used as gentle teaching tools.  The book is filled with short ideas or “zen shorts” meant to be pondered by the listener and the reader.  The stories in the book are based in Zen Buddhist literature and have been passed along for many, many centuries.  This is one of my favorite books and my kids love it too.

Zen Ties by Jon Muth- Mr. Muth writes in the back of the book, “Zen Ties is a fun play on words.  For me, it’s also a gentl reminder that we are all connected and interdependent whether we recongnize our neightbor’s face or not. It is easy to believe we are each wabes and forget we are also the ocean.” Indeed this story tells a wonderful tale of how we are all connected.
